Introduction
Traveling through the four most northerly counties on mainland Britain and thus to some of the most unspoiled and remotest places left in the country. From Ancient pine forests to vertiginous sea cliffs we’ll encounter a wonderful variety of birds in equally wonderful settings.
As we skirt the extents of the mainland coast line on our circular route back to Inverness, from the high road pass that leads to Applecross right round to the golden sands of Brora Beach and the mudflats of loch fleets estuary, this circular passage around the north of Scotland will give you a great birding experience.
The huge seabird colonies on Handa and the Caithness cliffs during the breeding season are a experience for the eyes nose and ears, raucous, busy and always smelly these huge colonies are a true wildlife spectacle that have to be seen, heard and smelt to be believed.
The Internationally important area of the Caithness flow country, the largest expanse of blanket bog in Europe Far from the coast and the beaten track set in the interior of the counties of Caithness and Sutherland. This primeval place has stunning bird life with breeding Greenshank, Dunlin, and Golden Plover to name but a few, Scaup are also found here, along with Red Throated Divers.
The Loch fleet estuary is frequented by hunting Osprey as well as breeding waders and ducks, but it’s during the winter months that it provides us with an abundance of wintering wildfowl, the number over the whole estuary system are often huge a wonderful site to see on a fresh winters day.
