Introduction
Travelling through the Great Glen by the shores of Loch Ness towards Ft. William and then beyond to Loch Sunart and the most Westerly point of Scotland at Ardnamurchan, before reaching the Isle of Mull. Our tour of the West Highlands and Mull is a wonderful five days packed with opportunities to see the excellent bird life of this remote and beautiful area.
Mull is home to more sea eagles than anywhere else in Scotland, after their reintroduction in the 1970’s on Rhum, Mull has proved to be the most conducive and productive breeding place for these fantastic birds.
There’s a an awful lot more to see than just eagles on this tour, with days at loch Sunart and sea watching at Ardnamurchan, we’ll have opportunities to see other raptors, divers & ducks along with some wonderful woodland, upland and moor land species.
Before all of that though, a trip to the cairngorms and surrounding area will bring up some of the rarities that have become true birding pilgrimages. During the summer months a walk to the high montane habitat of the plateau will be a test on the legs as we look out for Golden Eagle, Dotterel, Ptarmigan & Snow Buntings.
The forests of Abernethy and Rothiemurchas should bring up some fabulous woodland species with the iconic Crested Tit and the Great grouse itself the Capercaillie. Crossbills are also frequently seen in these forests along with the chances of some mammals, like red squirrel and roe deer. Inches marshes should provide us with some great breeding waders during the season as well as some fantastic wintering waterfowl
